Don't Fall Victim to "The View"

Author: admin 10 May 2007
Category: Articles
A common phrase uttered by many a home buyer is "Oh, look at that view!” Once a homebuyer sees the view, usually within the first minute or so of being inside an open house, is when "the view" is concentrated on, and the rest of the house is pushed to the back burner. All that home buyer can do is imagine themselves spending a night on the porch, drinking a cold one, and enjoying that view, thinking that you made a great decision about buying the house with a view. Of course, while you were daydreaming, you missed the large crack in the foundation, the old water heater, the water spots in the ceilings, and many other things. Letting your imagination run wild can cost you in the long run, no doubt, especially when it's running because of your fantasies involving the view.

It's important to be able to keep your thoughts and emotions in check when purchasing a house. In an earlier article, we discussed the need for a checklist to go through every time you visit a home. If having a view is on your positive side, that's fine, but be sure to not get caught up on just that one aspect of the home. Sometimes, the view isn't all it's cracked up to be, and you might miss out on noticing that.

Your yard backs up to this lovely creek, and you love the serenity and wide open spaces it brings. Of course, so do other people, and since your yard isn't fenced in anywhere, you notice that people like to take strolls often around it. If you don't mind, hey that's fine, but some people have this misconception of thinking that it's all private area, and having people stroll through it might not be their cup of tea.

Or say you've enjoyed watching the sunset behind your house for a good while. Then all of a sudden you notice that there's some land being prepped for something not far from the back of your house. Then soon thereafter you've got cranes and backhoes putting in a new condominium complex, with the selling point of the "awesome view" it affords. But guess who misses out on their selling point of the "awesome view" of the sunset? And there's really nothing you can do about it.

So you may fall in love with the view that a potential house brings, but don't get too caught up in it. Try to fall in love with the spacious bedrooms, the hardwood flooring, the tile in the bathrooms, things that are totally in your control, because the view can become the disappointment if you realize that the view was all the house offered up.
